The article is aimed at considering the impact of international sanctions in 2014 on the tourism development in Russia. It is substantiated that tourism today has become an important component of the growth of the national economy in almost all countries of the world. Russia is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world due to its rich cultural heritage, great natural and dramatic history. However, the 2014 sanctions, when the member states of the European Union, and a number of countries, including Australia, USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, Iceland and others, began to impose sanctions on Russia in connection with inclusion of Crimea and complicated relations with Ukrainian government, played a negative role in the development of international tourism, which was also reflected in the pages of the media. The research materials are the statistical data of Federal Statistics Agency, on the basis of which the development of the tourism sector in Russia was assessed. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the sanctions of 2014 led to structural changes and the direction of the flow of tourists. The number of Russian tourists to a number of countries associated with sanctions, and the number of tourists from those countries that are prohibited from entering Russia, decreased, but the number of tourists from some other countries increased, which significantly improved and expanded the development of domestic tourism in Russia. The results identified in this study, in particular, recommendations for the creation of educational programs and the involvement of the media for the development of recreational areas, will become a stimulating factor for the development of both domestic and inbound tourism in Russia.
